After the dead zone of reality TV - I was eager to see the movie - based on a show known for its good storytelling, mood setting filming and atmospheric music. The chemistry of the leader actors was good. I enjoyed the fact they had aged - maybe even mellowed a bit - and the story was entertaining. The music was great! Mulder was a man who refused to give up - no matter what the evidence said or what the authorities said. Scully was always the one to stop once the magic sign of "Science" popped up...her ability to not imagine possibilities was as fixed as Mulder's ability to think outside the box. They stayed true to those characteristics and that may be the problem....in all this time a healthy person should have grown to realize that dreams and mystery are important, just as important as good solid evidence. The human condition, however, needs both to happily exist. Mulder and Fox were forever the two divergent sides that could never come together (the true believer and the skeptic intent on debunking). I felt that, as much as I enjoyed the film, these were two passionate characters who had lost their way...
I guess one of many reasons I was disappointed: Scully had come to believe in the series. Now we find her at square one? It made no sense. While her reluctance to look once more into the abyss was understandable given all that she had lost to it, her reversion to not just skeptical of Father Joe but to the exisence of his abilities, seemed at odds with who the character had grown to become.
It was a horrible,trashy monster-of-the-week episode.
I was really hoping for a continuation of the mytharc like the first one but they still could have written a much better one-off story than that one...
