Yeah, well, living in the middle of a desert, I can tell you that more than a few times I'm tempted to write SOS in huge letters in the middle of the dirt. That's intriguing. I guess when you live in a place exposed to the sky, without trees and such, the sky and land meet completely, so there is no "up" or "down" but a sense of cutting between the two planes. I think in a wooded land, it would never occur to anyone to communicate with the sky, but when you're in the desert, you cannot hide its constant observation of your every move.
